Heart Cut Engagement Rings

A heart cut diamond needs no introduction. The most openly romantic of all diamond shapes, it wears its symbolism entirely without apology. A heart cut engagement ring is a declaration, as much as it is a piece of jewellery. It is for those who know exactly what they want to say, and who want to say it with a diamond.

At Bond Jewellery, our heart cut engagement rings are designed and crafted entirely in-house at our workshop in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Every stone is ethically sourced and our lifetime aftercare service covers every ring. Our team of designers and gemologists are here to help you find or create the heart cut engagement ring that is made for you.

There is nothing subtle about a heart cut diamond, but that is what makes them beautiful.

The Shape

What is a Heart Cut Diamond?

The heart cut is a modified brilliant cut shaped to resemble a heart, with a rounded base divided into two lobes by a cleft at the top and a single pointed tip at the bottom. It typically features between 56 and 58 facets, arranged in a modified brilliant pattern that delivers strong fire and sparkle across its surface.

The heart cut is technically one of the most demanding shapes to produce. The two lobes must be symmetrical, the cleft between them must be precisely defined, and the overall outline must be perfectly balanced from all angles. A well-cut heart diamond is the product of considerable skill and care, and the difference between a beautifully proportioned heart and a poorly cut one is immediately visible.

Comparison

How Does the Heart Cut Differ from Other Cuts?

The heart cut is the only diamond shape with an overtly symbolic outline, which sets it apart from every other cut in a fundamental way. In optical terms, it shares the brilliant faceting structure of the pear cut, from which it is most directly derived, and delivers comparable levels of fire and sparkle.

The heart can be thought of as a pear cut with the rounded end divided into two lobes. Its proportions, the ratio of width to height and the depth of the cleft have a significant impact on how recognisable the heart shape is, particularly at smaller carat weights where the outline becomes harder to distinguish. We generally recommend a minimum of 0.50 carats for a heart cut diamond to ensure the shape reads clearly on the finger.

Because the shape is symmetrical, any asymmetry between the two lobes is immediately apparent and significantly detracts from the stone's beauty. Our gemologists select only stones in which the two lobes are well-matched, and the overall outline is clean and precisely defined.

Bespoke Service

Can I Design a Bespoke Heart Cut Engagement Ring?

Absolutely. Our bespoke design service, based in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, gives you full involvement in every aspect of your heart cut engagement ring's creation. The proportions of the heart, the setting style, the choice of metal and the finer details of the band all contribute to an entirely personal ring. Our designers and gemologists will guide you through every decision, helping you find the right stone and build the right setting around it.

A heart cut engagement ring is already a deeply personal choice. Our bespoke service ensures that the ring itself is equally individual.

The heart shape becomes harder to read at smaller carat weights. As a general guide, we recommend a minimum of 0.50 carats for a heart cut diamond in a solitaire setting, and 0.70 carats or above for a stone where the shape should be clearly visible to the casual observer. A halo setting can help reinforce the heart outline at smaller sizes. Our team will always advise on the best stone for your chosen setting.

A V-tip claw at the bottom point of the stone is the standard solution, protecting the most vulnerable part of the diamond without obscuring its outline. Our team designs the setting specifically for the chosen stone and ensures that adequate protection is provided at the tip.

Rose gold is a particularly popular choice for heart cut engagement rings, as its warm, romantic tone complements the overtly romantic character of the shape. Yellow gold, white gold and platinum all work beautifully too, each bringing its own character to the design. The right choice is entirely personal, and our team can help you explore the options.
