Round Cut Engagement Rings

The round brilliant cut diamond is the most popular diamond shape in the world, it has been for over a century and it's not difficult to understand why. No other cut returns light quite as brilliantly, sparkles quite as intensely, or sits quite as naturally on the finger. A round cut engagement ring is the definitive choice and the standard by which every other shape is measured.

At Bond Jewellery, our round cut engagement rings are designed and crafted entirely in-house at our workshop in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Every diamond is ethically sourced and every ring is finished to the highest standard. Whether you are drawn to the classic simplicity of a solitaire or the brilliance of a halo, our collection and bespoke service give you the range to find exactly what you are looking for.

Our team is on hand to help you every step of the way, from stone selection to the final finish.

The Cut

What is a Round Brilliant Cut Diamond?

The round brilliant cut is a circular diamond featuring 57 or 58 facets, 32 above the girdle and 24 below, plus the table and, if present, the culet. The facets are arranged in a precise geometric pattern designed specifically to maximise the return of light through the crown of the stone. When a round brilliant is cut to ideal proportions, light that enters through the table is reflected internally and returned upward through the crown in an intense display of brightness, fire and sparkle.

The round brilliant is held to a higher degree of standardisation than most other diamond shapes. Cut quality — the precision with which the angles, proportions and symmetry of the facets are executed — has a profound effect on performance, and our gemologists select only stones that meet the highest standards in every dimension.

Heritage

The History of the Round Brilliant Cut

14th & 15th Century

Early diamond cutting produced simple point cuts and table cuts that made little use of a diamond's optical properties.

16th Century

The rose cut was developed, adding a domed top with triangular facets but still leaving much of the diamond's potential untapped.

1919 — The Breakthrough

Belgian mathematician Marcel Tolkowsky published his doctoral thesis Diamond Design, calculating the ideal proportions for a round brilliant cut diamond to maximise both brilliance and fire. His calculations — 57 facets, specific angles for the crown and pavilion, a table width of approximately 53% of the stone's diameter — became the blueprint for the modern round brilliant.

Tolkowsky's ideal cut has been refined further by subsequent generations of gemologists and cutting engineers, but its fundamental geometry remains the basis for the world's most popular diamond shape over a century later.

Comparison

How Does the Round Brilliant Cut Differ from Other Cuts?

vs. Other Brilliants

Other brilliant cuts share the same basic facet structure but adapt it to different outlines, inevitably creating optical compromises. The round brilliant's symmetrical circular outline avoids these compromises entirely and delivers the most consistent and intense light return of any diamond shape.

vs. Step Cuts

Compared to step cuts such as the emerald or Asscher, the round brilliant is dramatically different in character. Where step cuts offer a calm, glassy reflection, the round brilliant dazzles. The choice between them is a question of temperament and taste.

vs. Oval & Cushion

Compared to shapes such as the oval or cushion, the round brilliant tends to appear slightly smaller for its carat weight, as its depth retains more of the stone's mass below the girdle. However, its superior brilliance more than compensates for any difference in spread.

Bespoke Service

Can I Design a Bespoke Round Cut Engagement Ring?

Yes, and the round brilliant's versatility makes it one of the most rewarding diamonds to design around. Its ability to perform beautifully in virtually any setting style means that the design decisions are truly open, and our bespoke service, based in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, gives you full involvement in every one of them.

The round brilliant delivers more light return, fire and sparkle than any other diamond shape. Its circular outline is universally flattering on the finger, and its symmetry means it works in virtually any setting. Centuries of refinement have produced a diamond that is simply the best-performing shape available, and that performance continues to make it the first choice for the majority of engagement ring buyers.

We recommend choosing a round brilliant with an Excellent or Very Good cut grade from the GIA grading scale, or equivalent from other respected laboratories. Cut is the most important of the four Cs for a round brilliant. A well-cut stone will outperform a larger, poorly cut stone in almost every lighting condition. Our gemologists only select stones that meet the highest standards of cut quality.

For a given carat weight, round brilliant diamonds tend to appear slightly smaller in diameter than elongated shapes such as oval or marquise, because their depth retains more of the carat weight below the girdle. However, their superior brilliance often makes them appear more prominent than the numbers suggest. Our team can help you compare stone sizes and shapes during your consultation.

The round brilliant works beautifully in any metal. Platinum and white gold maximise the visual brightness of a colourless diamond. Yellow gold and rose gold add warmth and character. The right choice depends entirely on the personal taste of the wearer, and our team can help you explore the options in person.

Bond Jewellery is based in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, where every round cut engagement ring we create is designed and crafted in-house by our own team.
