Marquise Cut Engagement Rings

The marquise cut is the most dramatic of all diamond shapes. Long, narrow, and pointed at both ends, it creates more visual length per carat than almost any other cut, and on the finger, it commands attention in a way that is entirely unique. A marquise cut engagement ring is a beautiful choice for those drawn to it.

At Bond Jewellery, our marquise cut engagement rings are designed and crafted entirely in-house at our workshop in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Every stone is ethically sourced, and our lifetime aftercare service covers every ring. Our team of designers and gemologists are here to help you find or create the marquise cut engagement ring that is made for you.

Few diamonds make a statement as clearly as the marquise. We are here to help you wear it.

The Cut

What is a Marquise Cut Diamond?

The marquise cut is a modified brilliant cut with an elongated, elliptical body and two pointed ends, a shape sometimes described as a navette, meaning 'little ship' in French. It typically features 58 facets arranged in the same brilliant pattern as a round cut, delivering strong fire and sparkle across its entire surface.

The elongated shape of the marquise means it covers more finger surface area per carat than almost any other diamond shape, creating the impression of a significantly larger stone. This is one of the most compelling practical arguments for the marquise, alongside its exceptional length-to-finger ratio, which is unmatched in its lengthening and slimming effect on the hand.

Like other elongated cuts, the marquise can exhibit a bow-tie effect across its centre. Our gemologists select stones carefully to ensure this effect is minimal.

Comparisons

How Does the Marquise Cut Differ from Other Cuts?

The marquise is most naturally compared to the oval and the pear, both of which share its elongated, brilliant-cut character. Compared to the oval, the marquise is more dramatic: where the oval has softly rounded ends, the marquise has sharp points at both tips, creating a more assertive, directional shape. Compared to the pear, which has one rounded and one pointed end, the marquise is symmetrical, with pointed tips at both ends and a consistent visual weight across the length of the stone.

The marquise typically covers the most finger surface area of any diamond shape for a given carat weight, making it the most effective shape for creating the impression of a large, elongated stone. Its visual impact per carat is difficult to match.

Both tips of the marquise are vulnerable to chipping, and both require claw or V-tip settings for protection. Our team always advises on the most appropriate setting for the chosen stone.
