The Kimberley Process and Responsible Diamond Sourcing
At Bond Jewellery, we believe that the beauty of a diamond should never come at the expense of people or communities. We support the principles of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, an international initiative established in 2003 to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate global diamond trade. The scheme brings together governments, the diamond industry and civil-society organisations to strengthen transparency and accountability throughout the rough-diamond supply chain.
The Kimberley Process applies specifically to rough natural diamonds. Participating countries are required to introduce controls governing their production, import and export, trade only with other compliant participants and ensure that international shipments of rough diamonds are accompanied by an authorised Kimberley Process certificate. Together, participating countries represent almost all of the world’s rough-diamond trade.
Our Commitment to Conflict-Free Diamonds
Every natural diamond selected by Bond Jewellery is sourced through established and trusted suppliers who are required to operate in accordance with the Kimberley Process and the applicable laws governing the diamond trade. We seek written assurances and appropriate supply-chain documentation confirming that our diamonds have been purchased from legitimate sources and have not been used to finance armed conflict.
The international diamond industry supports the Kimberley Process through the World Diamond Council’s System of Warranties. This system requires businesses trading rough diamonds, polished diamonds and diamond-set jewellery to pass a warranty statement through their business-to-business invoices, helping maintain a documented chain of assurances as diamonds move through the industry.
Going Beyond a Minimum Standard
We recognise that the Kimberley Process is an essential foundation for responsible diamond sourcing, but that its current definition of a conflict diamond is focused specifically on rough diamonds used to finance rebel movements against legitimate governments. On its own, it does not address every potential concern relating to working conditions, human rights, environmental responsibility or wider geopolitical conflict.
For this reason, our responsibility does not end with Kimberley Process compliance. We carefully select suppliers who share our expectations of integrity, transparency and responsible business conduct. Our sourcing policy is designed to reduce risk throughout the supply chain and to ensure that the diamonds used in our jewellery are obtained through reputable, lawful and professionally accountable channels.
